American Golfer Joins Twitter

Blog dedicated to game of golf takes username @AmGolferBlog

The American Golfer blog has expanded its reach into the world of social media, taking the Twitter username @AmGolferBlog.

“Since starting the American Golfer blog in 2008, I always felt the website was plenty to share information about the game of golf,” said editor Bob Bruce. “However, we’ve posted so much news about worthy charities over the years, it seems a shame to not reach even more people in, or out of, the golf community.”

In an effort to grow followers, American Golfer will dedicate space on contests - in-house or external - and Tweet details and links.

“We hear about offers for prize giveaways, ranging from terrific golf equipment to luxurious, all-expenses-paid trips, on a daily basis,” Bruce said. “Being in the media, we’re inundated with this, whereas your average golf fan may not be. Twitter is a great way to share the wealth.”

Going the Distance Awards Program Encourages Consumers to Nominate Golfers Who Have Shown a Personal Dedication and Passion to the Cause

(FAIRHAVEN, Mass.) – Pinnacle, a leader in the distance golf ball category, announces the launch of the second annual Going the Distance Awards, a program celebrating and honoring golfers who are making a difference in the fight against breast cancer. Pinnacle is asking consumers to nominate a golfer they know by sharing their story at PinnacleGolf.com or Facebook.com/PinnacleGolf. Nominations can be made through March 31, and honorees will be announced in May.

The Going the Distance Awards honors 10 individuals within the golf community who have shown a personal dedication to the fight against breast cancer, while demonstrating a passion to furthering the cause and positively impacting the lives of others. Pinnacle has a long history of supporting charitable organizations that are aligned with golf and has been committed to battling breast cancer and funding research toward a cure since 1995.

“We had 10 extraordinary honorees in 2012 and we’re excited to celebrate 10 more individuals who are making a difference in breast cancer research, education and awareness in 2013,” said Mary Lou Bohn, Vice President, Golf Ball Marketing and Communications, Acushnet Company. “Breast cancer is one of the leading health issues facing women and their families today, so this disease touches golfers everywhere. By honoring and sharing stories from those in the golf community, we hope to inspire others to join the fight to find a cure.”

Going the Distance Awards honorees will be determined based on four key criteria: dedication to the fight against breast cancer demonstrating a personal passion and commitment to furthering the cause (e.g., volunteer, community advocate, medical practitioner); impact on others’ lives or the community; strong tie to breast cancer (e.g., survivor or family/friend of survivor); and connection to, and passion for, golf.

A judging panel that includes representatives from Pinnacle, Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the golf media, as well as a 2012 Going the Distance honoree, will choose the final 10 Going the Distance Awards honorees this spring.

Each of the final 10 honorees will have a $10,000 donation made in their name to Susan G. Komen for the Cure to help fund life-saving breast cancer research at the national level. In addition, each honoree will receive custom Pinnacle golf balls imprinted with his or her name and the Going the Distance Awards logo as part of a gift package featuring Acushnet Company and Susan G. Komen products. Each individual who nominates a winning honoree will also receive a gift package from Pinnacle.

Golf Architect Ian Scott-Taylor Made an Honorary Member of The Alister MacKenzie Society of Great Britain and Ireland

Scott-Taylor has Family Ties to MacKenzie

(Easton, Maryland) — Welsh-born golf course architect Ian Scott-Taylor was extended an honorary overseas individual membership recently to The Alister MacKenzie Society of Great Britain and Ireland. Scott-Taylor, whose practice is based in Maryland, is one of only two international architects in the Society, which is headquartered at Alwoodley Golf Club, a MacKenzie course, in Leeds, England.

Scott-Taylor, a student and admirer of MacKenzie’s architectural style, also has a close family connection to one of golf’s great “Golden Age” designers whose work in Britain and the United States was done in the early half of the 1900s. Scott-Taylor’s grandfather, a medical doctor as was MacKenzie, was an acquaintance of the Doctor before he became a designer of some of the game’s most famous golf courses.

“My grandfather, Dr. David Scott-Taylor, and Doctor MacKenzie first met in Edinburgh,” Scott-Taylor recalls. “Grandfather was at the university’s medical college, was a scratch golfer and also had the reputation as a fine rugby player. MacKenzie was keen on rugby and they became fast friends. They both served in the British Army during World War I and later my grandfather became a surgeon at Chester Royal Infirmary and would host MacKenzie at his home there and also in Wales at Holyhead. On one such visit to Holyhead, grandfather took MacKenzie to Nefyn to play and he was so struck with the dramatic cliff top holes that he set about looking for land to emulate what he had experienced. I believe this trip became the inspiration for his design of Cypress Point and also his work at Monterey Peninsula Country Club’s Dunes Course.”

Scott-Taylor also is a member of the The Tillinghast Association and the Donald Ross Society. For more information, visit www.ianscott-taylor.com.

Players Towel Carried By Winner At WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship

Third PGA Tour win in 2013

(Tucson, AZ) - Players Towel, the preferred golf towel by Tour players featuring high performance microfiber waffle technology, was used last weekend by the winner of the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship at Dove Mountain Resort in Tucson.

With snow, cold temperatures, sleet and wind the real headliners in Tucson, the Match Play Championship saw the best players in the world make early exits. But viewers and spectators were not left with boring weekend golf. Instead, the bracket matches were as exciting as any Ryder Cup tournament and a reminder just how unpredictable match play golf is.

"I would like to congratulate the winner of the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship on his 5th Tour victory," said Patrick Le Vine, founder of Players Towel. "By overcoming tremendous weather conditions and holding off the defending champion on the final day, he deserves all the praise and recognition he receives for this gallant win. Players Towel was on the bag to help the golfer and caddy withstand conditions that were truly unfit for golf."

In the past two years alone, Players Towel has proudly served the winners of 43 PGA and LPGA tournaments. Also, since 2010, Players Towel has celebrated wins at two PGA Championships, three U.S. Opens and two Masters.

Casa de Campo Christens Pete Dye Golf Lodge

(La Romana, D.R.) - From their earliest days together to the present, Pete Dye and Casa de Campo are inexorably linked. They would have it no other way.

Pete Dye
Casa de Campo, featuring the region’s No. 1-ranked golf course, has recognized its golf course architect by naming the popular Golf Lodge in his honor. Dye, who has designed 63 holes at the Caribbean’s leading resort, was introduced to the Dominican Republic in the late 1960s by Gulf and Western, which wanted to invest in the local economy. Among their plans was a world-class golf facility that would launch the country’s tourism industry. Dye was asked to help find the perfect location for this first resort.

He pointed them to the thousands of acres of inhospitable land the company owned near La Romana on the country’s southern coast. Site of the most productive sugar mill in the world, the soil was too dry for growing cane and too sparse for cattle grazing, while also overgrown with thick underbrush, rocks, and cactus. But it was close to the sea, a characteristic of the great Scottish courses Dye had toured just a few years before.

Under Dye’s leadership, some 300 locals worked with hand tools and ox carts to turn the hellish land into a heavenly site for a golf course. The area originally was given the name “Cajuiles,” for the cashew trees that grew on the surrounding mountains. But Dye overheard the workers referring to the sharp coral rock underfoot as “diente del perro,” or “Teeth of the Dog.” The course, which opened in 1971, had its name.

And the new resort had its calling card, a magnificent course along the Caribbean Sea that mixes the best of classic strategic architecture with tropical beauty. Since it opened, “The Dog” has ranked near the top of every list of the world’s great courses. Dye—who maintains a home on property—continues to play and tweak his design, keeping it up to date both architecturally and agronomically.

The Pete Dye Golf Lodge – 64 individual units – features décor with rich mahogany woods, richly appointed furnishings and a wide array of technological comforts, including flat screen television, complimentary wireless and iPod docking station.

Dye unveiled other courses at Casa de Campo over the decades. The Links—located next to The Dog, and slightly more inland—opened in 1976. It was followed by Dye Fore, three nines that spread big and wide across the cliffs at the other end of the resort, some 300 feet about the Chavon River; the Marina and Chavon nines opened in 2003, the Lakes nine in 2011. Dye also was responsible for the private La Romana Country Club, which was unveiled in 1990.

Both Teeth of the Dog and The Links were recently renovated under Pete Dye’s guidance. The final nine holes of Dye Fore (Lagos – The Lakes) opened in 2012. As well, more than $40 million has been spent upgrading many other parts of the 7,000-acre resort, including new restaurants, public areas, and the main pool deck.

No surprise, then, that Casa de Campo was recently named the Caribbean’s Leading Golf Resort, for the fifth consecutive year, at the Caribbean and Americas 2012 World Travel Awards. The resort also was named among the top 20 family and top 20 golf resorts by the readers of Andrew Harper’s Hideaway Report travel newsletter.

Kuchar Heats up Frigid Arizona Desert with WGC Match Play Victory

Bridgestone Golf Professional Climbs to No. 2 in FedEx Cup Standings with Win

(Covington, Ga.) — Taking his cues from American mail carriers, neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow could stop Matt Kuchar from successfully finishing his rounds at the 2013 World Golf Championships – Accenture Match Play Championship in Tucson.  However, in contrast from the Post Office, Kuch delivered on Sunday, dispatching Jason Day in the Semi-Finals 4&3 and Hunter Mahan 2&1 in the Championship Final at Dove Mountain.

Matt Kuchar
With the win, Kuchar recorded his first career WGC event title, 5th career PGA TOUR victory and joined fellow Bridgestone Golf tour team member Brandt Snedeker in the Top 2 of the 2013 FedEx Cup standings.

Kuchar’s Bridgestone Arsenal
* TOUR B330-S Golf Ball
* J40 430 Driver (9.5 degrees)
* J40 Cavity Back Irons Black (5-PW)
* J40 Black Oxide Wedges (52 and 56 degrees (bent to 57 degrees))

“Pound for pound we have the most successful tour team in the industry,” said Dan Murphy, Vice President of Marketing – Bridgestone Golf, Inc.  “From the beginning we’ve had a company philosophy to align ourselves with the best players and the best people out on TOUR.  We don’t play the numbers game trying to buy weekly equipment counts, instead we’ve focused on personalities that fit our brand and we make sure they have proper-fitting equipment that puts them in position to succeed.  We’re proud of what we’ve built and how we’ve built it, and to look at the FedEx Cup standings and see that the Top 2 players are Bridgestone guys is proof that our Tour philosophy is working.”

Throughout his six matches, Kuchar excelled in a variety of weather conditions – at times negotiating wintry conditions better suited for skiing than for championship golf.  On Sunday, temperatures barely reached into the 50’s and 35 mph winds tested every aspect of Kuchar’s game.  In his victory, Kuchar relied on Bridgestone’s TOUR B330-S golf ball and J40 clubs.

“The conditions were so difficult out there you just knew at times that par or bogey was a good score. The B330-S balls cut through the desert winds well this week and my comfort with the J40 clubs allowed me to attempt some difficult shots,” said Kuchar.

(Stafford, VA) - Mark Beran, the Head PGA Professional at Woodholme Country Club in Pikesville, Md., has been selected as recipient of the Middle Atlantic PGA's 2013 Bill Strausbaugh Award. This award bestows special recognition on a PGA Professional who has outstanding integrity and has shown commitment to mentoring fellow PGA Professionals in improving their employment situations, as well as involvement in community and charitable activities.

Mark Beran
The award is named in honor of the late "Coach" Bill Strausbaugh, former Head PGA Professional at Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase, Maryland, and member of the MAPGA Hall of Fame Class of 1989. Beran will be recognized in front of his peers at the MAPGA Hall of Fame and Awards banquet March 9 at the Gaithersburg Marriott Washingtonian Center in Gaithersburg, Md.

Beran spent much of his younger life in Warrington, Penn. where he and his identical twin brother, Michael, started playing golf regularly at the age of 13. Warrington Country Club was Beran's first employer in the golf industry. He was a golf shop associate and forecaddie during the day and a dishwasher at night. Beran's parents, Emil and Alice, were quoted as saying that Mark "lived at that club."

Beran translated this passion for golf into an education and a promising career by attending Ferris State University to major in Professional Golf Management. Following graduation, he immediately started his golf professional career at Brick Landing Plantation in Ocean Isle Beach, NC. After Brick Landing, Beran spent some time in Rye, NY at Westchester Country Club and then moved to the Middle Atlantic Section in 1991 to begin an assistant professional position at Baltimore Country Club. His first Head Professional/General Manager position came in 1995 at Minisceongo Golf Club in Pomona, NY.

While at Minisceongo, Beran started on a path to not only make himself successful, but to also help others become successful in their own right. After ten seasons in Pamona, Beran returned to the Middle Atlantic Section by accepting the Head Professional position at Woodholme Country Club in Pikesville, Md. In this new role, he has led his staff and guided future PGA Professionals to achieve their goals. Rudy Virga, a longtime friend and former first assistant of Beran's, is now the PGA Director of Operations for Empire Golf Management which is just one of many examples of how Beran's mentoring has helped others succeed in golf and other professions.

In addition to leading and mentoring his staff, Beran has made a commitment to the Middle Atlantic Section. He currently serves on the Board of Directors and is the Vice President of the Northern Chapter. With his successful history in employment services, he also chairs the MAPGA's Employment and Club Relations Committee. A prime example of his commitment to employment was when he visited a stand-alone driving range, talked to the owner and found him a PGA Professional who would help increase his business. Beran has also championed efforts to enhance communications regarding all the employment tools available to PGA Members.

Ocean Pines Golf & Country Club to Complete Greens Renovation Project this Spring

(VIENNA, VA) - Ocean Pines Golf & Country Club - owned by the Ocean Pines Association and managed by Billy Casper Golf - will debut 18 newly renovated greens as part of its "Rediscover Ocean Pines" program this spring.

Last year, BCG began converting all greens on Ocean Pines' 18-hole golf course to United States Golf Association-specified A1 Bentgrass. The front nine was completed in 2012 and the back nine will be converted in spring 2013. In addition, Ocean Pines has installed new drainage pipes and re-shaped bunker edges on the front nine. The course is slated to re-open in late-April or early-May. In the interim, golfers play the open nine twice for a full 18-hole round (nine holes for $15 or 18 holes for $25).

"Now is the ideal time for the community to rediscover all the wonderful attributes of Ocean Pines," says John Malinowski, Director of Golf at Ocean Pines Golf & Country Club. "The course is the only Robert Trent Jones, Sr. design on Maryland's Eastern Shore, and the new putting surfaces ensure even better playability and enjoyment for our loyal golfers."

Pursell Farms (AL) Welcomes New Executive Chef

Award-Winning Culinary Professional Creating ‘Country Chic’ Fine Dining Experience at ‘The Farm’

(SYLACAUGA, Ala.) –  Pursell Farms – the renowned boutique resort located on 3,500 pristine acres less than an hour from Birmingham – has welcomed new Executive Chef Andrea Griffith to its elite hospitality team.

Featuring more than 13 years of experience, Griffith has earned 11 American Culinary Federation (ACF)-accredited medals, including honors in ice carving, cold food salon and hot food.  She was awarded the distinction of Certified Chef de Cuisine, the third level of achievement at the ACF.

“Andrea has proven herself as a top-echelon chef, which fits our boutique resort’s standard of excellence,” said Pursell Farms’ co-founder and CEO David Pursell.  “She is passionate about our farm-to-table Southern cuisine, and we look forward to having Andrea create many special events at Pursell Farms where she can showcase her artistic, experiential flair and incredible talent.”

Griffith is working with local farmers to obtain the freshest ingredients to create country-style, flavorful food. She is also utilizing Pursell Farms’ one-acre garden that offers a variety of corn, tomatoes, peppers, okra, peas, squash, green beans and more as a source for farm-fresh produce.  Griffith prefers her food to be prepared with no preservatives or additives, which is why she also makes her own condiments.

“This is the beginning of a whole new culinary experience at Pursell Farms,” said new General Manager Keith Izydore. “Chef Griffith is revamping what we offer and how we offer it, so our guests will enjoy an amazing assortment of menu selections for breakfast, lunch and dinner, along with the outstanding service, for which we’re known.”

Griffith got her start working as a 16-year-old pastry chef at a Whole Foods in Philadelphia, which helped her build a strong background in baking. At the resort’s recent “A Chocolate Romance” Valentine’s Day event at The Parker Lodge, she taught a chocolate truffle-making class and prepared a candlelit dinner for guests.

She trained at The Art Institute of Philadelphia for Culinary Arts where she earned a full scholarship, and has worked at a variety of venues, including The Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia, Primland in Virginia and the renowned Circa in Philadelphia.

“There is such a value placed on family and togetherness at Pursell Farms and it drew me here immediately because the Pursell family truly cares for their guests and their employees,” said Griffith. “Pursell Farms is a first-class resort destination and I want the food here to not only be delicious, but invoke a feeling and hold a memory with our guests.”

Although she started her new position a few short weeks ago, the Philadelphia native has already made changes to the dining experience at Pursell Farms, including rearranging the dining room layout to give a more “country chic” feel, tapping into local craft beer makers and canning vegetables to preserve freshness.  She will also begin teaching cooking classes at Pursell Farms.

The Grille at Pursell Farms is open to the public and serves an ever-changing, upscale menu of specialty sandwiches, salads and Southern-style, home-cooked entrees. Private, full course dinners are offered to overnight guests in the luxury cottages and the resort is available for weddings, luncheons, dinners, corporate events, business meetings, parties, receptions and more.

The addition of Griffith is the latest of a host of recent hospitality enhancements at Pursell Farms, including the addition of a liquor license and the appointments of Izydore as General Manager and Terry Davis, Jr. as Director of Golf at FarmLinks Golf Club in 2012.

Pursell Farms is home to the state’s top-rated, public-access golf course, which is also the world’s first and only research and demonstration facility. For the last 10 years, the resort has annually hosted thousands of golf course superintendents and agronomy professionals for its “The Experience at FarmLinks” program, which teaches industry best practices and introduces cutting-edge technology.

Other on-property amenities include a specially crafted 5-stand clay shooting range, world-class hunting and fishing, meeting space, event and wedding services.
