(Los Gatos, CA) - Jay Blasi is on a quest to qualify for a spot in the 2015 U.S. Open at Chambers Bay. The 36-year-old golf course architect is entered in the May 13 local qualifier field at the Stanford University Golf Course. What makes this story compelling is that Blasi spent 10 years of his life working for Robert Trent Jones II and served as the project architect at Chambers Bay.
As one of the youngest contributing golf architects to participate in the design of a U.S. Open course, Blasi was involved in all aspects of the design from concept through construction. He worked directly with the shapers in the field on the details of the greens, bunkers and grass lines on the course. Blasi credits RTJ II for providing the opportunity to realize his childhood dream, which was to be part of a design team for a U.S. Open golf course.
Today, he heads up Jay Blasi Design headquartered in Los Gatos, California. Blasi has some interesting projects in the pipeline, including a major renovation of Santa Ana Country Club in Orange County, California, and being part of the restoration team of Alister MacKenzie’s Sharp Park Golf Course in Pacifica, California.
Jay hopes to accomplish the rare feat of participating in the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay as both a competitor and contributing designer.
