Golf’s $35 Billion Opportunity

(Cambridge, UK) - Women account for just 24% of golfers worldwide, yet the number of prospective female players could add $35 billion to the global golf economy.

Carin Koch and Jeff Cox
These are the findings of a groundbreaking global study into female golf participation commissioned by Syngenta and conducted by an independent international market research company.

The new report, ‘The Global Economic Value of Increased Female Participation in Golf’, surveyed 14,000 people in eight markets in North America, Europe and Asia.

It found that 29% of non-golfing females and lapsed players were either interested or very interested in taking up golf in the next two years.

Being outdoors, relaxation and spending time with family and friends are the primary appeal factors to non-golfers.

It also found that women are 38% more likely than men to bring children to golf, indicating that increasing female participation would significantly boost the number of juniors taking up the game.

Launching the report at the HSBC Golf Business Forum, Syngenta Global Head of Lawn & Garden Jeff Cox said: “For the first time, we have been able to assess worldwide latent demand for golf among women and estimate the potential economic value to the global golf industry.

“As our survey shows, millions of women worldwide could be interested in taking up golf within the next two years. This is a huge opportunity for the golf industry. However, realizing this opportunity, engaging and then converting prospects, requires golf to listen to and address the specific needs of its different customers.”

The report (which is free to download from focuses on three key research themes:
• The economic value of female golf
• Realizing the value of existing female customers and prospective players
• Women as a catalyst for junior golf

Carin Koch, the 2015 European Solheim Cup Captain and Syngenta Golf Ambassador said: “As a professional golfer who has been fortunate to travel around the world, I know that golf is a game with global appeal to both men and women. I also know, as a mother of two children, that golf is a wonderful way to share time with family.

“One of the most interesting findings for me was that family responsibilities and cost were the two main reasons women give up golf, yet spending time with family and friends is one of the great attractions of golf. If golf could make itself more female and family friendly, there is both an immediate and long-term opportunity to retain and attract many more female golfers and bring their children into the game.”

The survey is part of Syngenta’s ‘Unlocking Golf’s True Potential Campaign’ and is the first in a series of Global Customer Insights studies.

Jeff Cox added: “This report is designed to help the global golf industry understand its customers and build its value proposition.

“Gender diversity is good for sport – and it is good for business. It is also something that a modern, globalized society expects.”

December Traveling Golfer Stays Warm by Heading Indoors at Play-a-Round Golf

(PHILADELPHIA, Pa.) - The December Traveling Golfer show provides a change of pace from its regular excursions to resorts across the country and around the world. This month it takes the show indoors.
Play-a-Round Golf, the indoor play and practice facilities on Philadelphia's Main Line, are the site for the December episode of the award-winning golf and lifestyle television show.
The first Play-a-Round Golf center opened 10 years ago on Lancaster Pike in Malvern. The newest center opens this month on Greenfield Ave. in Ardmore. These two indoor golf centers are emblematic of the largest area of growth in the golf industry - virtual golf.
"Our goal is to take golf to Main Street," says Steve Graves, owner of the two Play-a-Round golf facilities. "We have entered a new era in the world of golf. People have less time available for the game. Our indoor facilities solve a number of golf's biggest obstacles to growth."
The Play-a-Round centers are fueled by the latest simulator technology, courtesy of the industry leader About Golf. Golfers can choose from more than 60 golf courses worldwide for their indoor experience. Or they can chose to practice on a modern driving range - with the support of every technological advance in swing evaluation.
"It is a totally new concept in the way we play and practice golf," says Jim Bromley, a PGA professional and one of the instructors available for lessons at Play-a-Round Golf. "Not only is the golf realistic, but you never have to worry about wind, rain, heat or cold. Every swing is taken under perfect conditions."
Show host Tony Leodora is a firm believer in the indoor golf phenomenon. He has seen it evolve over the last 10 years.
"I play in better-ball competitions at Play-a-Round Golf," says Leodora. "I practice on the range. I test new equipment. I fine-tune the equipment I already have. I had to be convinced in the beginning, but now I am a complete convert."
The episode from Play-a-Round Golf begins airing December 1 - the same day as the grand opening of the new facility in Ardmore -- and runs throughout the month on the Traveling Golfer network of websites ... including The Golf Director Network (see full list of sites on It also will air on Monday, December 12 as part of the Press Box television show in Myrtle Beach, 5 to 7 p.m. on HTC Ch. 4. The Traveling Golfer also airs as a scheduled weekly feature show on Comcast SportsNet and The Comcast Network throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. Comcast SportsNet airings are 10:30 a.m. Sundays and 4:30 p.m. Thursdays. The Comcast Network airs the show at 6 p.m. Mondays and Fridays.
As part of every Traveling Golfer show there is the additional feature, "Tech Talk", hosted by Tour Edge Golf experts, such as President Dave Glod. With years of experience as a club maker, Glod presents an inside look at the research and development of high-quality golf equipment.
Responding to golfers' never-ending demands to learn more about interesting golf courses and golf resorts across the country and around the world, well-traveled host Tony Leodora created the Traveling Golfer so he could take viewers on video trips to some of the most exciting golf locations. The show won first place for golf television broadcasts in the prestigious International Network of Golf Awards, presented at the PGA Merchandise Show in January.
The Traveling Golfer is a series of monthly shows hosted by Leodora, who has 16 years of experience in televised golf. The featured destination stays on the website for one month, before being replaced by a new show. The old shows are archived for continued viewing on home website,

Four Scottsdale Troon Courses Introduce Caddie Services

Boulders, The Phoenician, Kierland and Troon North Enhance Guest Experience with New Amenity

(Scottsdale, Ariz.) – Boulders Resort & Spa, The Phoenician Golf Club, The Westin Kierland Golf Club and Troon North Golf Club have all introduced new caddie programs to provide an additional level of service for guests. When playing at any of the four golf properties, guests will have the option of playing with a Forecaddie, a Double Bag Carry Caddie (available at Boulders, The Phoenician and Kierland), a Single Bag Carry Caddie or choose to play without a caddie.

A caddie’s primary job is to help golfers navigate the golf course, but caddies also assist with speed of play, improve course conditions by replacing or filling-in divots, properly fixing ball marks on greens and raking bunkers. Caddies are also ambassadors for the golf properties and for the destination, spending four-plus hours with guests and offering suggestions on restaurants, shopping, spas and more.

When booking a tee time at least 48 hours in advance, guests can choose the following caddie options:
Forecaddie – Forecaddies will be positioned ahead of the group and will track shots for each player in the group. Forecaddies will also offer advice on how to play the course and help players select the proper target lines. When appropriate, forecaddies will also care for the course, raking bunkers, replacing divots when necessary, tending flagsticks, cleaning balls and clubs, and help golfers manage the course.
Double Bag Caddie – Double Bag Caddies will work with two golfers in the group and will describe the best play for each hole, assist with yardages, rake bunkers, replace divots, help around the greens, tend the pin and perform any other duties required.
Single Bag Caddie – A Single Bag Caddie will work with a single golfer and will describe the best play for each hole, assist with yardages, rake bunkers, replace divots, help around the greens, tend the pin and perform any other duties required.

“If you’ve ever played golf with a caddie, you know how much more enjoyable it makes a round of golf,” said Mike Ryan, division president, Troon Golf. “The new caddie service at these four Scottsdale properties not only elevates the golf experience, but also greatly enhances Scottsdale as a golf destination.”

Caddie services range from $30 per player for a Forecaddie to $100 per player for a Single Bag Carry Caddie. The recommended gratuity is $20 and up per player for Forecaddies and $30 and up for walking caddies.

Tiger Woods to Wear TW ‘17 at Hero World Challenge

Tiger Woods will lace up a new signature shoe when he returns to the course this week

(RELEASE) - When Tiger Woods returns to action this week — his first tournament play since Fall 2015 — he’ll come equipped with a prototype of his latest signature golf shoe, the Nike TW '17.

“This shoe is an absolutely integral part of my return to the sport I love and have missed so much,” Woods says. “Nike really got in the zone with me. I knew Tobie and I were on to something special back when I tried on the first prototype. I feel supreme support from this shoe which leads to the utmost confidence when I step onto the course."

Since July 2015, Woods and the Nike team, led by Tobie Hatfield, Nike Senior Director of Athlete Innovation, reimagined the 14-time major champion’s signature footwear. The team leveraged the additional time they had with Woods to start at the very beginning and address his needs as his rehab progressed.

Below are some of the key moments that informed the design and creation of the TW ‘17:

Woods and Hatfield meet over dinner during the Greenbrier Classic and agree on positioning for the Nike athlete’s next generation of footwear — they didn’t want to simply update his current shoe. During the discussion, Woods reveals his new swing has shifted his dominance from his left leg to his right.

Hatfield delivers four options of an initial prototype shoe to Woods at his home in Florida. The prototypes all address the need of keeping his feet more secure and locked down in his shoe. Woods selects one of the concepts to move forward with.

Hatfield and Carl Madore, Innovation Design Lead for Nike Golf footwear, share four varied options of the prototype for Woods to assess. Woods hits on a simulator, and is intrigued by the duo’s strapping system concept — designed to help keep him secure through his swing and a full day of golf.

Nike delivers a polished product to Woods, who begins his own wear testing on the course. Since returning from surgery, it’s the only golf shoe Woods has worn.

The NIke TW '17 will be available in Spring 2017. Stay tuned to @nikegolf for more information.

Product Review: Chase54 Ipanema Shirt, Mustang Pullover

When I hear the word Ipanema, I immediately think of the beach and Rio de Janeiro ... Sipping a tropical drink at an outdoor cafe while watching people go by. Now, thanks to Chase54, I’m also going to think about my favorite sport - golf.

The Ipanema golf shirt from Chase54 feels as good as it looks. Probably because it acts like a performance tee I’d wear to the gym, while looking like the classiest shirt in my closet. It’s all in the stretch ... This shirt isn’t going to restrict my swing.

Constructed of 90/10 polyester/spandex, the Ipanema also boasts reinforced seams and a removable powder coated collar stay. And if you’re concerned about sweating through your shirt during a hot, summer round, no worries ... DRYFUZE is the Chase54 answer to moisture wicking. Sweat is pulled away from your body and brought to the shirt’s surface where it can be magically whisked away by Mother Nature.

Speaking of DRYFUZE, the Mustang pullover also utilizes the moisture-wicking technology. Good to know, because those hot rounds can start with a bit of a chill in the air or cool down once the sun begins to set.

Also incredibly stretchy (87/13) with reinforced seams, Chase54 refers to the Mustang’s fabric as “butter soft.” Feeling is believing. I may curl up for a post-round nap in this 1/4 zip.

Mentioned earlier, but worth repeating ... These two items look great, but feel even better. The last thing you want when you’re playing a round of golf is to be restricted by your apparel. Golf is hard enough without battling your clothes.

Check out the Ipanema shirt and Mustang pullover at While you’re there, browse the rest of the men’s section as well as the fabulous and fashionable women’s line.

Product Review: Biion Footwear

I started playing golf in the 1980s. Back then, golf shoes were made of leather and thick, unforgiving soles, with metal spikes. What they lacked in comfort, they made up for in ugliness. In other words, there wasn’t anything nice about golf shoes - feel or look.

Everything has evolved over the last 30-plus years, of course, and today’s golf shoes are constructed with comfort in mind, as much as performance. One company doing things completely different and taking comfort to another level is Biion.

We tried out the very stylish wingtips, but there are also classics, brights, saddles and patterns. While most have a real flare, those who really want to stand out will choose something from the patterns collections. Think argyle, leopard / zebra print, anchors, snake skin, tropical, and more.

Before you take your shoes out of the box, you’ll notice the difference. In fact, these shoes are so light you may think you received an empty box! The secret is the light and flexible ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) material.

Another difference ... There are no laces on the Biion shoes. The stretchy opening makes sliding them on and off a breeze. That said, be sure to get the right size as you can't compensate by tightening the laces. The company recommends you go down one half size to one full size from what you normally wear. Decide between a “performance fit” vs. “relaxed fit.” Performance is the size down, while relaxed is your typical size. I could wear either, but will opt for the smaller size on the course.

Perhaps my favorite difference is the ability to wear Biion shoes without socks. Don’t worry about sweaty, stinky shoes as a result. These kicks are designed with anti micro-bacterial composites and breathable holes. If they do get a little sketchy, they’re 100 percent washable and dry in seconds.

As you can imagine, Biion shoes are spikeless - opting for a honeycomb cleat and Hextra-grip technology. This combines for traction and stability.

I know there are some hardcore traditionalists out there who found it difficult to give up their metal spikes when plastic came into vogue. Those people surely haven’t embraced the sheer comfort of spikeless shoes at this point. Biion is not for them. They are, however, for anyone who would like to experience the near weightlessness of these puppies. They have to be the closest thing to playing golf barefoot.

Buying pre-owned golf balls aligns with prudent consumer trends for previously-consumed textbooks, children’s clothing, maternity wear, cards, household appliances, bicycles, toys, furniture, wedding attire and fixer-upper homes.  Retail pundits predict the secondary product market could represent more than 25% of all consumer purchases by 2025.

Product Review: Lamkin Grips

Golf’s off season has hit much of the country, but there’s no reason to put away your clubs just yet. Keep your putter out to practice on the carpet and do yourself a favor by swapping out your worn grips on the rest of the clubs.

Sweat, dirt and wear-and-tear wreak havoc on your grips. If you’ve lost tackiness, have them replaced. A grip slipping in your hand as little as 1/8 an inch can send your ball 20 yards off target. Let that sink in for a moment. You can strike the ball perfectly and still miss your target wildly if the club slips just a fraction.

Not sure what grips you should use? A good place to start would be the Lamkin Grips website. The company walks you through a four-step process:
Grip size - Do you want undersize, standard, midsize or oversize? If you’re not sure of your size, there’s a test you can perform with a ruler.
Weather conditions - You know the part of the country in which you play ... Are you playing in mostly dry conditions or do you play in wet and/or humid conditions? If you play without a glove and have sweaty hands, Lamkin suggests you select “wet” conditions.
Surface texture - A lighter surface pattern is smoother, provides more comfort and feels tackier. A heavier surface pattern offers more traction and promotes a slip-free connection with the club.
Material firmness - A softer material is ideal for player's looking for extra comfort. A firmer grip promotes enhanced swing control and provides exceptional torque rigidity; typically preferred by players with a high swing speed.

Answer these four questions and you receive recommendations. There are more than 30 styles from which to select and they come in a plethora of colors, ranging from standard black to pink, purple or lime green.

While you’re at it, consider the grip on your putter. You can shop for those, as well.

Gripes clean and reactivate grips
I tried the Z5 grips, which come in black, red and blue and cost $7.99 each. Assume the name is derived from the five zones on the grip. The horizontal pattern and cotton cord weave in the upper zones provide exceptional traction. The middle zone is designed to secure a golfer's thumb in a consistent, solid position. And the micro texture in the bottom zones provide a smoother, more comfortable feel in the non-glove lower hand.

Being from Ohio - with cold, wet springs and hot, humid summers - I need the all-weather performance, so the durable rubber compound should be ideal.

Now that you’ve replaced your grips, keep them looking and feeling like new with a package of Gripes - grip-cleaning wipes. These wipes quickly and easily remove dirt and grime from your grips and reactivate surface tackiness.

I tried Gripes out on my old grips and was pleased with the results. Not sure what the active ingredient is, but the wipes have a scent similar to Windex. One wipe can clean 5-10 grips, but I’d suggest staying on the lower end for best results, especially if the grips are very dirty.

(FAR HILLS, N.J.) – The United States Golf Association (USGA) and FOX Sports will unveil their film, 2016 U.S. Open: DJ’s Major Redemption, on Thanksgiving Day in celebration of the 116th U.S. Open Championship.

Narrated by Emmy Award-winning actor Andre Braugher, the hour-long film will debut on Thursday, Nov. 24, on FOX (3 p.m. EST; check local listings) prior to the nationally-televised NFL game between the Washington Redskins and Dallas Cowboys. Additional airing dates and times can be found below and here.

2016 U.S. Open: DJ’s Major Redemption chronicles Dustin Johnson’s journey to the thrilling conclusion of this year’s championship, held in June at historic Oakmont Country Club, in suburban Pittsburgh, Pa. Hosting the U.S. Open for a record ninth time, the storied H.C. Fownes-designed layout served as the perfect backdrop for Johnson to capture the major championship that had eluded him in 28 previous attempts.

After a series of heartbreaking close calls, including a second-place finish in the 2015 U.S. Open at Chambers Bay outside of Seattle, Johnson entered the 2016 championship determined to wipe out the memory of his previous disappointments.

Through candid interviews that take viewers behind the scenes, the film tells the story of Johnson and 155 other competitors who battled one of golf’s ultimate tests in pursuit of the coveted championship.
“Dustin exhibited all the characteristics of a true U.S. Open champion – his professionalism, skill and endurance through so many challenges – and we couldn’t be more proud of him,” said Diana Murphy, USGA president. “This film will provide viewers with a perspective that few get to see first-hand, as the golfers strive to secure their place among the all-time greats.”

2016 U.S. Open: DJ’s Major Redemption highlights the storylines, inspirational moments and spirited performances of the 116th championship. Exclusive interviews featuring Johnson, co-runner-up Shane Lowry and underdog Andrew Landry – who won over the crowds by taking the first-round lead and contending into Sunday – are complemented by commentary from FOX Sports’ Shane Bacon, Brad Faxon, Scott McCarron and two-time U.S. Open champion Curtis Strange.

Michigan’s Meadowbrook Country Club Prepares for Spring 2017 Re-Opening

(Northville, MI) — The legendary Meadowbrook Country Club in suburban Detroit has announced that the golf course renovation work by Andy Staples Design has been completed. The grow in has been underway on all the greens, tees, fairways and roughs and, based on weather conditions over the next six months, the club is planning for a grand re-opening in mid-May.

One of the area’s historic private golf clubs, Meadowbrook Country Club embarked on a major renovation of its historic 1916 course to mark the milestone occasion of its 100th anniversary. Originally designed by Scottish classic architect Willie Park, Jr., with a later contribution by the renowned Donald Ross, Meadowbrook will soon unveil a refreshing new look thanks to Arizona-based Andy Staples Design.

“I am astounded at the quality of the grow in and how well the place has established,” said Staples. “There are 12-14 holes ready for play already, and the last holes are not far behind. With a friendly winter and a warm spring, we’ll be open on time. I’m also blown away with the views across the property and how each hole now allows for strategic views from one hole to the next, taking advantage of the dramatic topography.”

Amongst the membership, the greens are the most talked about aspects of this redesign. The intention was to make them difficult, but interesting. The architect’s plan was to keep consistent speeds known as “Meadowbrook speed,” rather than posting stimpmeter readings or discussing green speeds in terms of numbers.

“Our Pure Distinction greens will be some of the best in the metro area,” said club general manager, Joe Marini. “The club’s decision to move ahead with this project is paying off and is positioning us as one of the leaders in how a renovation should be done.  Our design team did a spectacular job.”

According to Staples, “With the addition of more bentgrass on the fairways, approaches and green surrounds, the course will provide more options of play, and be a course golfers will need to think their way around. There is no doubt in my mind that Meadowbrook will be one of the most unique clubs in the area. I’m honored to have been a part of it.”

As with the entire OUUL line of bags and accessories, the vision of the Python Stand Bag was inspired by the detail, texture, and design of the fabric. The Python imaginative and proprietary material is uniquely created by OUUL’s development team as the company designs and develops ALL of their own materials. This is something that rarely other bag, luggage or accessory company can do.

The Python fabric vibrantly displays the same vibrant bold colors and patterns similarly reflected to a Python’s skin. The apple green/black/green and red/apple green/yellow emphasize the inspiration. The complete collection showcases the overlapping scales and distinct skin patterns of a Python.

According to Belding’s Managing Director Brien Patermo, “In today’s state of depressed material execution we are thrilled to be able to provide our marketplace this dynamic hand crafted OUUL forward thinking, functionality superior, fashion driven product line that puts our bag industry back in a premium category. OUUL demonstrates the character and personality that we focus on to make a difference and positively impact the golf consumer.”

This innovative material application is equally matched with styling, appointments and unsurpassed weighting. The Python Stand Bag features 9.5” – 5 way top which is accentuated with a multi-handle top design that makes maneuvering this stand bag easy. Three perfectly positioned pockets help with storage and one beverage pocket keeps any drink accessible.

Besides the signature Python hand crafted print, the overall weighting of the Python Stand Bag might be its finest feature. It weighs only 2.7lbs which ascertains its own weight division – SUPER LIGHT. Thanks to an intelligent design people who prefer to walk will save their backs, their golf game and overall health. A 4-point lightweight dual strap makes carrying this golf bag a breeze. A flex foot base system makes the Python Stand Bag sturdy on the course and on whatever lie.

The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club in Southwest Florida Reopens Championship Golf Course

Dramatic $9 Million Redesign by Jack Nicklaus & John Sanford;
Resort Offering a New “Golf by the Gulf” Package

(NAPLES, FL) – The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club in Southwest Florida has completed the dramatic renovation—almost reinvention—of its championship golf course. The total redesign of the AAA Four-Diamond beachfront resort’s course was done with input from golf icon and acclaimed course designer Jack Nicklaus in collaboration with noted course architect John Sanford. The Jack Nicklaus redesign of the course began in April, and the course is now open and fully operational, according to the resort’s General Manager Jason Parsons.

This major $9 million project follows $50 million in impressive renovations and enhancements at the resort over the last few years. Set on 125 lush acres, complemented by seven miles of pristine white sandy beach, The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club is Southwest Florida’s only resort directly on the beach with an on-site championship golf course, a world-class spa, and an award-winning tennis center.

Notably, in redesigning the course Jack Nicklaus helped to celebrate his past and that of The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club, as he has a unique historical tie to the resort. It was in 1951, on a family vacation to Naples, and a friendly round of golf alongside his father, that the Ohio native accomplished the very impressive feat of first breaking 40 over nine holes on the resort’s course, shooting a 37. At just 11 years old, he came within a shot of shooting par, and just one year after he picked up golf clubs for the first time. This round, in particular, is what drew Nicklaus to the project–the scorecard is even archived in the Jack Nicklaus Museum, the 24,000-square-foot facility on the campus of The Ohio State University.

“Being back at The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club is like a walk down memory lane for me,” Nicklaus said. “Returning to the same course where I broke 40, with my father by my side, brings back a lot of very special and very fond memories. At the same time, I am enjoying the opportunity to work with John (Sanford) on this rebirth, if you will, of a wonderful layout.”

Nicklaus added, “I think those who have played The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club before are in for a pleasant surprise. I believe the golf course has been transformed into a fun, exciting, aesthetically pleasing layout, largely due to hard work of John Sanford and our own David Savic. I think the end product is something people will enjoy and have fun with in the Naples area for many years to come.”

“We are very proud and excited about the opening of our dramatically renovated and redesigned championship golf course,” said Parsons. “The redesign is a unique collaboration between the greatest player of all time Jack Nicklaus, who also is one of the world’s most distinguished and celebrated golf course designers, and the very talented John Sanford. It really has been a pleasure to see them collaborate on this new, par-71 course, which features five tees, ranging from 4,800 yards to over 6,900 yards. Our guests, groups, and golfers of every skill level will absolutely love the truly beautiful new course, which is now in line with the rest of our AAA Four-Diamond resort. The new course is a terrific addition to the experience for our guests.”

Golf Course Architect John Sanford said, “The course has been redesigned to challenge the best players but also be enjoyable for all golfers. The redesign takes advantage of the sandy soils so the course will play ‘firm and fast.’ The ball will roll out so tee shots will be longer and approaches are open to accept running shots to the greens. The greens are gently contoured to allow for multiple hole locations but have continuous movement that will challenge all skill levels. Many of the large trees were cleared to ‘open up’ the course and various types of palm trees have been planted to extend the beachfront character of the resort. The course has ‘grown in’ beautifully and is 100% ready to open which is rare in our industry. The greens are rolling nicely and the landscape has matured amazingly well this summer and fall. We are very excited about the reopening of the course.”

Sanford added, “We have a number of great new holes at the resort course, which includes the ‘signature hole’ #16. It is a medium length ‘Redan’ par 3. The green is a peninsula with water in front, on the right and behind the green. It’s not long but will require accuracy to hit the green.”

In addition to the new course, the resort has added a 300-yard practice and teaching range, and has new golf carts with GPS tracking systems to aid golfers with yardages on each hole, thus helping pace of play.

A great way to experience the resort and the new course is by taking advantage of the resort’s new “Golf by the Gulf” package.
