USGA Announces 2021 and 2022 U.S. Senior Open Championship Sites

Omaha Country Club to host in 2021, Saucon Valley Country Club in 2022

(FAR HILLS, N.J.) – The United States Golf Association (USGA) announced Omaha (Neb.) Country Club and Saucon Valley Country Club, in Bethlehem, Pa., as the host sites for the 2021 and 2022 U.S. Senior Open Championships, respectively. The 2021 Senior Open, to be contested July 8-11, will be the second Senior Open and second USGA championship held at Omaha Country Club. Saucon Valley Country Club will host its third Senior Open and eighth USGA championship from June 23-26, 2022.

“The USGA is pleased to return to both Omaha Country Club and Saucon Valley Country Club to conduct the most prestigious championship in senior golf,” said Stuart Francis, USGA Championship Committee chairman. “Both regions and communities have enthusiastically supported the U.S. Senior Open in the past and fans have attended in great numbers to watch an international field compete for the Francis D. Ouimet Trophy.”

At Omaha Country Club in 2013, Kenny Perry won the U.S. Senior Open by carding a 7-under-par 63 over the final 18 holes, one stroke off the championship record. Perry’s 72-hole score of 13-under 267, which matched Hale Irwin for the lowest score in U.S. Senior Open history, was five strokes ahead of runner-up Fred Funk (272). Corey Pavin and Rocco Mediate tied for third at 7-under 273.

“Omaha Country Club is honored to be the host club for the 2021 U.S. Senior Open Championship,” said Patrick Duffy, co-chairman. “The entire community embraced the championship in 2013 and is excited to have the USGA return to Nebraska for this global event. This weeklong championship, featuring the world’s best senior players, will again provide significant economic impact to the local community.”

Saucon Valley will become the first course to host three U.S. Senior Opens, having been the site of the championship in 1992 and 2000. Oakland Hills Country Club (South Course), in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.; Inverness Club, in Toledo, Ohio; and Scioto Country Club, in Columbus, Ohio; each held the championship twice. Salem Country Club (2001, 2017), The Broadmoor (2008, 2018) and Omaha Country Club (2013, 2021) will join that group.

“On behalf of our board of governors and the entire membership of Saucon Valley Country Club, it is an honor to serve as the host club for the 2022 U.S. Senior Open Championship,” said David B. Kennedy, club president. “We are excited that 2022 will also mark the 100th anniversary of the opening of our Old Course. This championship will provide a positive economic impact to our greater Lehigh Valley community.”

Omaha Country Club was designed in 1925 on 190 acres of farmland and forested countryside. Perry Maxwell, a founding member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, was commissioned to redesign the course in 1951. Keith Foster directed major renovations and enhancements to the course in 2005.

In 2013, Perry became the third player to win the U.S. Senior Open and Senior Players Championship in the same year, joining Gary Player (1987) and Orville Moody (1989). The champion’s 127 total over the final two rounds shattered the U.S. Senior Open record by three strokes and his 10-stroke comeback over the final 36 holes is the greatest in championship history.

Perry started the day two strokes behind 54-hole leader Michael Allen, who shot a 2-over 72 to finish fifth at 274. Perry raced by the field with a 5-under 30 on the outward nine, including a string of five birdies in six holes.

Omaha Country Club has hosted the Nebraska State Amateur on 16 occasions, most recently in 2016. Johnny Goodman, an Omaha native and the last amateur to win the U.S. Open, in 1933, won the second of his three consecutive Nebraska State Amateurs at the club in 1930.

This will be the fourth USGA championship held in Nebraska and the seventh in the Central Plains. In 1941, Marvin (Bud) Ward defeated Pat Abbott, 4 and 3, to win the U.S. Amateur Championship at the Field Club of Omaha. In 1996 at Firethorn Golf Club in Lincoln, Kelli Kuehne won her second consecutive U.S. Women’s Amateur title with a 2-and-1 decision over Marisa Baena.

Saucon Valley Country Club’s Old Course was designed by Herbert Strong and opened in 1922. Revisions were completed by William Gordon, Perry Maxwell and most recently Tom Marzolf from the Fazio Group in 2008. Saucon Valley’s historic 850-acre facility also features the Weyhill Course, Grace Course and a six-hole course for juniors and novice golfers. The club is a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary.

In the 1992 U.S. Senior Open, Larry Laoretti finished with rounds of 67 and 68 at Saucon Valley to post a four-stroke victory over Jim Colbert. Laoretti, who spent most of his career as a club professional, shot a 72-hole score of 9-under 275. He started the final round with 11 consecutive pars and capped his win by holing a 20-footer from the fringe on the par-4 18th.

Irwin won his second U.S. Senior Open and fifth USGA championship in record-setting style at Saucon Valley in 2000. Irwin established the 72-hole record of 17-under-par 267 – since matched only by Perry in 2013 – to defeat Bruce Fleisher by three strokes. Irwin posted a 65-65 finish by making 15 of his championship-best 23 birdies over the final 36 holes.

The 2014 U.S. Mid-Amateur was the most recent USGA championship held at the club. Scott Harvey defeated fellow stroke-play medalist Brad Nurski, 6 and 5, in the 36-hole final. In 2009, Eun-Hee Ji sank a 20-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole to win the U.S. Women’s Open, edging Candie Kung by one stroke.

Saucon Valley has been the site of three other USGA championships. Billy Maxwell defeated Joseph F. Gagliardi, 4 and 3, to win the 1951 U.S. Amateur Championship. The club also hosted the 1983 U.S. Junior Amateur (won by Tim Straub) and the 1987 U.S. Senior Amateur (won by John Richardson).

Additionally, the club hosted the 2008 and 2013 Pennsylvania State Amateur, conducted by the Pennsylvania Golf Association, and several Golf Association of Philadelphia championships, including the 1977 Philadelphia Open and 2010 Philadelphia Amateur.

The 2022 U.S. Senior Open will be the 89th USGA championship held in Pennsylvania. In 2020, Philadelphia (Pa.) Cricket Club will host the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship.

The U.S. Senior Open was first played in 1980. The championship for golfers age 50 and older is open to any professional and any amateur with a Handicap Index® not exceeding 3.4. This year’s Senior Open will be played at Salem Country Club, in Peabody, Mass., from June 29-July 2.

The 2018 championship is scheduled for June 28-July 1 at The Broadmoor Golf Club (East Course), in Colorado Springs, Colo. In 2019, Warren Golf Course on the campus of the University of Notre Dame, in Notre Dame, Ind., will host from June 27-30. Newport (R.I.) Country Club will be the host site for the 2020 Senior Open, from June 25-28.

Ship Sticks Announces Partnership with Fairways for Freedom

(West Palm Beach, FL) - Ship Sticks, the world’s largest golf bag shipping company, announces a new partnership with Fairways for Freedom, a 501 (c) (3) Public Charity whose mission is to help combat-injured veterans assimilate back into society through holistic initiatives and the game of golf.

Fairways for Freedom conducts trips to Ireland, Scotland and other bucket-list destinations for combat-injured veterans. One of the goals is to connect leaders in the business community (Ambassador/Donors) with veterans on these golf trips. Business professionals serve as not only sponsors to the veterans, but also as mentors, and, in turn, learn what true sacrifice is all about. The great courses of Ireland and Scotland, for example, provide an exhilarating environment for building these relationships. In addition to golf, the veterans take part in therapeutic sessions, such as Yoga designed for those with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Fairways for Freedom also conducts veterans-only retreats throughout the year, including to such destinations as Red Ledges Resort in Utah, Streamsong Resort in Florida and Sebonack Golf Club on Long Island.

“We are thrilled to partner with such a great program, which provides our country's veterans with unique opportunities,” said Ship Sticks Founder and President Nicholas Coleman. “We simply hope to add to their incredible experiences by simplifying the way they travel while playing some of the world’s best golf courses, and fostering relationships with those who share a love for their country and the game of golf.”

Said Fairways for Freedom Founder and Director Roger Schiffman: “We are delighted to forge this new relationship with Ship Sticks, whose stellar reputation for great service in a timely fashion is well-earned in the golf industry. Ship Sticks clearly understands the sacrifice our men and women in uniform have made and is doing its part to make life a little easier for these combat-injured veterans.”

Lost Holes of France’s #1 Links Course, La Mer at Le Touquet Golf Resort, Restored to 1930s Glory

(Le Touquet, France) – France’s #1 links, La Mer at Le Touquet Golf Resort, has undergone a major restoration project as part of long-term plans to restore the course and resort to their 1930s glory.

The Harry Colt classic, regarded as one of the finest links on the Continent, opened in 1931 when Le Touquet was the most fashionable resort in Europe.

But fortification and bombardment during World War II resulted in significant damage to the terrain and the abandonment of four of Colt’s original holes.

While efforts were made to restore these holes in the 1990s, the discovery of aerial photography from the 1930s helped golf architects and leading restorers of classic courses in Europe, Patrice Boissonnas and Frank Pont, bring the entire course back to what now closely resembles Colt’s original design.

“This is the kind of commission a golf architect dreams about,” said Boissonnas. “Finding lost holes from a legendary course designer like Harry Colt – the mastermind behind the New Course at Sunningdale, the West Course at Wentworth and Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, to name but a few – is like finding treasure in a treasure hunt. There are so few situations like this, and when they do come along, it is very exciting.

“Along with a great sense of responsibility, this renovation gave me a strong sense of the opportunity to put things right. As part of reviving the missing four holes – the 13th to the 16th – we were able to restore Colt’s original dogleg right par-5 15th, described by his design rival Tom Simpson as one of the best he’d ever seen. Returning the par-3 16th to its original setting has also allowed us to reinstate a spectacular downhill par 3.”

The newly restored links course, set behind the towering dunes and vast beaches at Le Touquet, is receiving high-level plaudits.

Adam Lawrence, editor of Golf Course Architecture magazine, has written he believes La Mer is a future European top 10 course in the making. He said: “Le Touquet's La Mer is a genuine links course, the best form of golf, and there are precious few links in Continental Europe. Harry Colt’s La Mer layout has great terrain and a bunch of great holes.

“I stand by what I wrote; there is a top European course trying to get out here.”

While the classic La Mer has been restored to its original layout, significant investment in the 45-hole Le Touquet Golf Resort – part of the Open Golf Club group – continues.

A new architect designed clubhouse has opened offering golfers contemporary comforts and hospitality. There is also a new look for Le Manoir, the resort’s hotel. Featuring a new, upgraded, interior designed restaurant, there are now future plans to transform Le Manoir into a boutique style hotel.

Le Touquet Golf Resort is less than an hour’s drive south of Calais on the Cote d’Opale. With easy access to the A16 autoroute, it is easy for golfers to drive direct from the UK, Belgium and The Netherlands, as well as the rest of France.

Medalist Golf Club, Renovated by Bobby Weed Golf Design, Posts Significant Rise in Golf Digest Rankings

(PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Florida) – Medalist Golf Club, a private club in Hobe Sound, Fla., which was redesigned in 2015 by Bobby Weed Golf Design, now ranks #11 on the 2017-18 Golf Digest list of Best Golf Courses in Florida. Medalist, originally designed in 1995 by Pete Dye and Greg Norman, was the 25th-best venue in Golf Digest’s 2015-16 list of Best Golf Courses in Florida. This jump represents the largest rise of any golf course in the Florida Golf Digest rankings ever.

“The golf course at Medalist achieved significant early prominence, but lost its luster as its original features were softened and changed,” said Bobby Weed. “Our challenge was to restore and improve upon the layout for the benefit of its members, guests and the many PGA Tour players who call the course home.

“Its rise in the Golf Digest list of Best Florida Courses reflects the attributes of the comprehensive, sympathetic renovation, adding length, returning stacked sod walls to the bunkers and bringing back the original low-profile style of the green complexes.”

The renovation resulted in a 7,571-yard layout with a slope of 155 and a course rating of 77.9, making it one of the sternest tests of golf in the country. Besides a prominent membership, many former and current PGA Tour and LPGA Tour players are members of Medalist Golf Club, utilizing the well-conditioned 18-hole par-72 golf course as their practice facility and training ground to further hone their skills.

Vertical Groove Driver Enters U.S. Sr. Open Ranked #1 & #2 in Driving Distance on PGA Tour Champions

This Week at Salem Country Club, six Players, including 2016 Sr. PGA Champion Rocco Mediate, will Tee-Up the Only Driver to Feature Innovative Vertical Groove Face Technology

(Boston, MA) - The cutting-edge Vertical Groove Driver, in only its first season in the market, continues to surge on the PGA Tour Champions. This week at the U.S. Sr. Open at Salem Country Club, in Peabody, Mass., the driver enters competition ranked #1 and #2 in driving distance, while 6 players, including Vertical Groove Golf staff player, Rocco Mediate, will tee-up the only driver to feature innovative vertical groove face technology.

The Vertical Groove Driver, which conforms to the Rules of Golf, is designed to reduce spin at impact, forcing tighter dispersion and leading to, on average, up to 40% straighter ball flight and up to 10 yards further in driving distance. Now, some of the best players on the PGA Tour Champions are recognizing the results in competition.

“To have six players, not including staff player, and driving distance leader, John Daly,  who is injured this week, using our product in competition on tour, truly helps validate the performance attributes of the Vertical Groove Driver,” said Jeff Barry, Chief Executive Officer, Vertical Groove Golf, LLC.  “This is just the beginning, as our goal remains to become the #1 driver on this tour, which features some of the world’s most competitive and accomplished professional golfers.”

Daly, and 2016 Sr. PGA Champion, Rocco Mediate, who serve as a Global Ambassadors for Vertical Groove Golf, have been instrumental in driving the performance message, as well as product demo among players on the PGA Tour Champions. Daly, who won the 2017 Insperity Invitational in May using the driver, is currently injured and will miss the U.S. Sr. Open.

Barry adds, “We’re disappointed for John that he cannot compete in the U.S. Sr. Open, especially as he is having a fantastic year driving the ball more consistently, while leading the tour in driving distance. We anticipate strong performances from the stable of players using the Vertical Groove Driver this week, and we are excited at the possibility of another win on tour.”

The 450cc Vertical Groove Driver, which is available in both right and left handed models, is offered in 8, 9.5, 10.5 and 12 degree lofts (right) and 9.5 and 10.5 degree lofts (left), while featuring a full range of Aldila premium grade, tour-proven aftermarket NV2K series shafts as standard.  The available flexes include: 45 gram L (Ladies), 50 gram A (Senior), 55 gram R (Regular), 65 gram S (Stiff) and 65 gram X (Extra-stiff).

At a length of 45.5 inches, the Vertical Groove Driver provides an optimum launch angle while maximizing carry distance and ball speed for many players. It is equipped with Golf Pride Tour Velvet grips in standard, midsize and oversize models. Alternative shaft options from Fujikura, Mitsubishi and Aldila also will be available. Suggested retail price of the Vertical Groove Driver is $399.99.

Antigua to Serve as Provider for Team USA's Uniforms at the 2017 Solheim Cup

From left: Ascend, Prize and Pyramid
(PEORIA, Ariz.) - Antigua Group, Inc., one of the nation's leading designers and marketers of lifestyle and golf apparel under the distinguished Antigua brand, has been named the provider for Team USA's uniforms at the 2017 Solheim Cup.

The 2017 Solheim Cup will be held at Des Moines Golf and Country Club in West Des Moines, Iowa from Aug. 18-20.

Having created Team USA's clothing at the last three Solheim Cups, working on the 2017 uniforms presented a unique challenge for Antigua designer Danielle Dellios, who created something fresh and new using the traditional red, white and blue color scheme.

"Instead of coming up with designs that were solely 'Americana' in feeling, I decided to give the team a more sport-driven look," said Dellios. The abstract prints in the new designs are a big change from the previous outfit presentation.

Team USA captain Juli Inkster has been very active with input on the uniform designs for both her winning team in 2015 in Germany and for the 2017 uniforms.

"She also loves to get American fans involved by asking them to wear red one day, white another day, and navy blue the third day -- to support the team's efforts on the course," said Dellios. "She has been fantastic to work with through the whole process."

The Friday outfit for the first day of competition at the 2017 Solheim Cup features a new take on polka dots - the red and white print Ascend polo is matched with the Ascend skort and short that sport a mirrored version of the same print, in white with red dots. The gradient dotted pattern creates an optical illusion.

The team will start Saturday's matches wearing the Prize polo and skort. The polo features a zip placket, a solid white body with contrast navy color printed insets. The print pattern is reminiscent of all-over sequins, minus the metallic effect. The coordinating skort is printed all-over with solid white welt pockets and waistband. Both the polo and skort feature a stretch jersey knit fabric.

On Sunday, the team will don mostly white with an asymmetrical engineered printed navy and red triangle. The Pyramid polo features a snap placket with front and back printed panels. The coordinating Pyramid short and skort feature the same print, with a star cut-out in the triangle pattern. The skort is made of a stretch jersey knit fabric, while the short is made from stretch twill woven fabric.

The Quarry also earned a spot on Golf Digest’s prestigious list of “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses” for 2017. It has received this distinction every year since 2005. Finally, The Quarry was the top-ranked Minnesota design on MyGolfSpy’s “Top 100 Courses in the U.S.” list, where it earned the No. 8 spot. The Legend also made the list at No. 28.

“The Quarry consistently ranks among the best courses in Minnesota,” says Bill Colgan, Regional Manager at BCG. “We are thrilled Golfweek and Golf Digest recognize the consistently exceptional golf experience we provide.”

Both The Quarry and The Legend have a unique layout and character. Built on the site of an old sand and gravel mining operation, The Quarry is a fitting tribute to the region’s mining history. The Legend is carved out of the Superior National Forest and offers breathtaking views.

“Together, The Legend and The Quarry are two of the most sensational golf courses in the United States,” says Steve Dowling, Explore Minnesota Golf Alliance Executive Director. “Both of these esteemed courses have received numerous national and local accolades and, in one trip to the Biwabik resort, you’ll understand why.”

The Triple Play at Applecross: Something for Every Member

(DOWNINGTON, PA) — Applecross Country Club, the Greater Philadelphia’s first Nicklaus Design golf course, debuted in 2010 and has emerged as one of the area’s most innovative and progressive country clubs. For 2017, the club is celebrating yet another series of milestones with three great new member facility improvements coming online this season.

1. The grand opening of the golf clubhouse
2. A renovation of its Trego dining facility to include three distinct dining venues
3. The new sport court area at the Grove Amenity center

Located less than 40 minutes from Philadelphia in Downingtown, Applecross CC is a residential country club community featuring a broad array of first-class club amenities, including a Nicklaus Design golf course on which Michael Nicklaus served as lead architect.

The golf course at Applecross weaves through the Chester County countryside providing a unique-to-the-area experience for golfers, blending magnificently into landscape that boasts breathtaking views of sparkling lakes and rolling countryside. Wetlands and water features grace the surroundings of 14 of the holes.

In addition to its signature golf course, the club boasts a series of amenities unmatched in the region. Members can enjoy the Oasis Bar along with a 10,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art fitness center, indoor pool and Jacuzzi, resort outdoor pool area with Junior Olympic swimming, kid’s splash pad, basketball and tennis. The club’s sprawling amenities are professionally managed and offer a host of specialty programs and personal training.

Milestone No. 1 — The Golf Clubhouse
The Nicklaus golf course goes to a new level in 2017. The three-level, state-of-the-art clubhouse is expected to greatly enhance the club’s golf experience.

The sprawling new Golf Clubhouse is approximately 15,000 square feet; with gracious outside deck spaces providing the framework for a destination that meets any golfer’s needs. Located at ground level, the men’s and ladies locker rooms provide a haven before and after a round, with convenient access to cart staging by the 19th tee. On the main level the pro shop and a deck overlook holes 18 and 19, and represent the place for everyone to get their round started right.

Designed around the success of the “Crow’s Nest” at Mid South Club in Pinehurst, this adult’s only lounge features a full-service bar, casual seating and its own private deck overlooking holes 18 and 19. Food service in the Eagle’s Nest includes a timeless menu of snacks and bar style food to help make the end of a round as memorable as the fun on the course. Stair and elevator access conveniently connects all three levels of the clubhouse.

The stunning new Applecross golf clubhouse was designed by Structural Design Associates located in Downingtown. Andrew Sheerer, the principal of SDA, and his team brought an immense amount of experience along with a hands-on and comprehensive approach to all aspects of the project. www.structuraldesignassociates.com

Managing day-to-day construction for the Applecross Clubhouse was in the hands of Chris Yates and his firm Innovative Building & Remodeling. Chris was 24/7 on the job coordinating the various trades and working through the immense amount of field decisions that go along with a job of this nature. www.innovative-building.com

Milestone No. 2 — Country club dining for every taste
Side by side with the new Golf Clubhouse is Tregos, the club’s dining facility, which received its own renovations this season to provide a unique dining space for families, pub-style dining and a special niche for wine lovers.

Family Dining and Kids Wii/Xbox Lounge - Family dining at large community style tables is a centerpiece of the Applecross dining experience. Recently renovated, the club’s four-season garden pavilion at Tregos plays host to regular family dining with multiple Xbox/Wii play stations. Complimentary fresh popped popcorn, beanbag chairs for the kids and a host of other family friendly touches make this a regular spot for the many families of Applecross. The club’s recent Xbox tournament was a big hit with more than 50 families competing.

The family dining area was a must-have program element from the inception of design. “Having a distinct family dining area is an important feature,” said Applecross General Manager Gregg Russell. “We know how challenging it can be sometimes to take the family out and keep the kids occupied while mom and dad can finish their dinner. The ‘Wii Room’ was first deployed at our sister club, Talamore, and it has been a huge success. Applecross’s new family dining and fun zone takes that original concept to a new level. It is extremely popular with all the families at Applecross.”

Comfortable and Casual Dining in the new Bar & Grill — Moving to another section of the club’s expansive dining facilities is the Casual Dining Bar and Grill. Booth seating, hi tops and a comfortable bar make this a great place for casual club dining.

And for the wine aficionados — Set for an early July opening is a new Member Wine Locker program, where members can store their own wine at the club and dine in quiet comfort at yet another dining venue. The Wine Bar is also located in the Trego dining facilities building. “We have quite a few members who share a passion for wine and wanted to have their own special spot and unique touch. Our new Wine Bar and Wine Locker program gives them just that,” said Russell.

Milestone No. 3 — All bases covered
The Grove amenity area of Applecross received its own expansion with a new sport court area. The custom design features shuffleboard, tetherball, four square, hopscotch and half-court basketball. Weight lifters at the club’s fitness center can shoot a few quick hoops after their workout with the convenient location of the new basketball court. And for kids, the club got a special hoop that can be lowered to 6 feet, which was just right for the Memorial Day Weekend Slam Dunk contest for kids.

Three great milestones — One simple approach
“The general goal is simple,” said Russell. “We have a diverse membership and want to provide a unique and comfortable spot for everyone. Our ‘triple play’ of new member enhancements this year takes huge steps to meet that goal and vaults our club to a new level.”

GolfMatch Becomes Preferred Social Golf Partner of Troon

(Scottsdale, Ariz.) – Troon, the leader in golf course management, development, and marketing, has partnered with GolfMatch, the first mobile booking application that connects like-minded golfers at the courses they want to play, to be the company’s preferred social golf partner.

GolfMatch is the only social booking platform that allows golfers to see who they will be playing with before they purchase their tee time, which Troon believes will play a major role in the future of digital bookings. When new members join GolfMatch, they are given suggested Groups to join. The recommended Groups serve as a golfer’s digital communities that are based on skill, location and interests, and allow members to connect and communicate in real time.

GolfMatch also has a social sharing element to their mobile app where golfers share their experiences and leave course reviews that provide trusted insight into local courses. Whether a golfer is organizing their next round or simply looking to talk about golf, GolfMatch Groups are a fun way to stay connected to the game at all times.

“This is an exciting partnership for Troon, which we feel will provide a valuable offering to Troon golfers and courses, as well as GolfMatch members,” said Kris Strauss, senior vice president, sales and marketing, Troon. “GolfMatch and Troon share a common vision for golf’s future and the need to create great experiences for golfers of all ages, skill levels and interests.”

Troon facilities currently host monthly casual-competitive events through the GolfMatch mobile application and are now offering registration for Troon Challenge qualifiers on the GolfMatch mobile application. Furthermore, Troon plans to offer the GolfMatch social booking system for Troon courses to utilize to create unique opportunities around fun experiences with unique formats. Through the partnership GolfMatch members will also enjoy preferred rates on exclusive events at participating Troon destinations.

"Our goal is to grow participation in golf by improving the golf experience,” said GolfMatch founder Peter Kratsios. “GolfMatch helps golfers organize great golf experiences by surfacing important golfer and course information, which makes the digital booking process smarter and faster. Troon is forward-thinking when it comes to offerings that improve the experience for their golfers and courses, which is why I am so excited to build a digital bridge between our community and their courses."

Product Review: SwingOIL

In my 30s, a life of physical activity began to negatively affect my day-to-day mobility. While I was formerly able to bounce back the morning after a tough workout, that was no longer the case.

Now in my 40s, aches and pains are as common as the sun rising. It doesn’t take much more than life to put a hitch in my giddy-up. I needed a little something more than Advil, so I began my search with SwingOIL.

The SwingOIL mantra is “Get loose. Swing smooth.” But what is it about the product that promotes this loosening effect? Let’s take a quick look (via WebMD and Wikipedia) at the active ingredients:
Glucosamine is marketed to support the structure and function of joints (often targeted at people suffering from osteoarthritis);
Chondroitin sulfate is a structural component of cartilage and provides much of its resistance to compression;
Turmeric is a spice, commonly used in Asian food. The root of turmeric is also used widely to make medicine - combating ailments like arthritis, heartburn (dyspepsia), joint pain, etc.;
Panax ginseng improves thinking, concentration, memory, work efficiency, physical stamina, athletic endurance, and prevents muscle damage from exercise;
Rhodiola is used for increasing energy, stamina, strength and mental capacity; and as an “adaptogen” to help the body adapt to and resist physical, chemical, and environmental stress. It is also used for improving athletic performance, shortening recovery time after long workouts;
Taurine is an amino sulfonic acid, but it is often referred to as an amino acid, a chemical that is a required building block of protein; and
Citrulline Malate. Some people also take L-citrulline to build muscles and improve athletic performance.

Put it all together, and you have SwingOIL.

Suggestions from the company:
- Drink it 15 minutes before tee-time to stay loose and sharp;
- Drink it during your round to make sure you don’t play tight when it matters most; and
- Drink it after the final putt, to help your body prepare for your next round.

Think of it the same way you view oil for your car. It keeps the moving parts lubed. Choose between three delicious flavors - Lemon-Lime, Orange and Strawberry-Banana. I’m partial to the Lemon-Lime, but was shocked at how tasty the Strawberry-Banana is.

Rip open a 3-ounce pouch and enjoy.

Check out www.swingoil.com to learn more for yourself or to place an order. A 12-pack sells for $34.95.

Historic Columbus Country Club in Midst of Golf Course Renovation

(Columbus, Ohio) – Historic Columbus Country Club is in the midst of a two-year golf course renovation project that began in the fall of 2016. The newly renovated front nine recently reopened on May 19th, while the back nine will undergo its renovation transformation after Labor Day 2017. The entire 18-hole renovation and layout will be finished by Memorial Day 2018.

Golf course architect Kevin Hargrave is overseeing the extensive renovation which is focusing on the original design concepts of famed golf course designer Donald Ross and bringing the proper scale back to the Columbus Country Club property. During front nine renovations, 1,000 trees were removed exposing the extensive canvas Ross once worked with. Original lines of play were brought back, while the newly renovated bunkers reflect the style and feel of Ross’s work. Hargrave also incorporated numerous new or repositioned tee complexes making the course more playable for the entire membership. When complete, the new layout will stretch from 5,400 to 7,200 yards.

Managed by Troon Privé, the private club operating division of Troon, Columbus Country Club also boasts a nine-hole executive course along with eight tennis courts, a large swimming pool, spacious clubhouse and a diverse entertainment calendar.

TPC River Highlands, Remodeled by Bobby Weed Golf Design, Attracts Strong Field for '17 Travelers

(PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Florida) – A strong field was attracted to the 2017 Travelers Championship, played June 19-25 at TPC River Highlands, a private golf club in Cromwell, Conn., which was redesigned by Bobby Weed in 1989 in consultation with former PGA Tour players Howard Twitty and Roger Maltbie. In addition, last year Weed worked in conjunction with PGA Tour Design Services on a course-wide bunker renovation at TPC River Highlands to update the strategy, based on ShotLink data, and to improve playability and maintenance.

“TPC River Highlands, overlooking the Connecticut River, offers players a variety of half-par holes with an exciting four-hole finish in an amphitheater setting like no other,” said Weed.

For a thrilling and dramatic victory at this year’s Travelers Championship in front of record crowds, Jordan Spieth blasted out of the bunker on the par-4 18th hole, the first hole of a sudden-death playoff against Daniel Berger, marking Spieth’s 10th PGA Tour win.

Operated by the PGA Tour, the 18-hole par-70 TPC River Highlands has been the venue for the tour’s annual Travelers Championship, previously known as the Buick Championship and the Greater Hartford Open, since 1984.

Some of the other notable names in this year’s 156-player field at the Travelers Championship included Patrick Reed, Rory McIlroy and Jim Furyk, among others. The defending champion was Russell Knox.

Fred Couples Wins American Family Insurance Championship with Bridgestone Tour B330-S Golf Ball

(COVINGTON, GA) – Fred Couples relied on the Bridgestone Tour B330-S golf ball to capture his second PGA TOUR Champions title of 2017, a two-shot victory at the American Family Insurance Championship contested this past weekend at University Ridge Golf Club in Madison, Wis.

Trailing by three shots entering Sunday, the World Golf Hall of Famer drained four birdies on the front nine en route to a final round 66 and his 13th win on the PGA TOUR Champions. He trusted the B330-S to produce better green side spin and longer drives to give him the edge needed to beat the competition.

The B330 series is engineered to deliver maximum results for skilled golfers who demand high-level performance in all facets of their game. Designed based on data gathered from Bridgestone's proprietary ball fitting program and validated by the top players in the world, the B330 series is unmatched tee to green.

“I went out Sunday knowing I had to go low and that my equipment would allow me to do that,” said Couples. “Regardless of the shot, my Bridgestone ball delivered exactly what I needed to outpace the pack and put up a winning score.”

“Fred continues to play exceptional golf and the fact he has won twice this year is a testament to that,” says Angel Ilagan, President and CEO of Bridgestone Golf. “He takes his game very seriously and only puts equipment in play that gives him an advantage over the competition. Whether you’re a former Masters champion, like Couples, or trying to break 100 for the first time, our golf balls will outperform anything on the market and help you find your edge."

In addition to Couples, FedEx Cup champion Brandt Snedeker, Olympic bronze medalist Matt Kuchar, three-time major champion Nick Price and young phenoms Bryson DeChambeau and Hudson Swafford have all won using Bridgestone products. Scores of fellow professionals choose to use Bridgestone balls without compensation.

Titleist Balls, Equipment Lead the Way at this Week's Travelers Championship

(RELEASE) - After a record-breaking week at the 117th U.S. Open, the PGA Tour has now passed the midway point in the 2016-2017 tournament schedule. The first stop as players make the turn down the homeward stretch is Cromwell, Conn., and TPC River Highlands, host of this week's Travelers Championship.

For those players who endured the demands of U.S Open competition, The Travelers will represent a much lighter lift. The par-70, 6,841-yard layout at TPC River Highlands is nearly 1,000 yards shorter than Erin Hills Golf Course, with receptive greens and plenty of birdie opportunities.

One player who knows how a thing or two about making birdies at River Highlands is Titleist Brand Ambassador Justin Thomas, who shot the lowest score in relation to par -- a 9-under-par 63 in the third round at Erin Hills -- in U.S. Open history. At last year's Travelers, Thomas orchestrated a Sunday charge for the ages. He made five straight birdies to close out his front nine and added four more on the back. He finished with an 8-under-par 62 that propelled him to a T3 finish.

"It's a fun course," Thomas said earlier this week. "I mean it sounds crazy, but I feel like every time you tee it up you have a chance to shoot in the 50s. That's fun. If you get your putter rolling and you're driving it well, you're going to have so many wedges and so many short clubs in your hands where you can make a lot a lot of birdies and you can really post a low number. I wouldn't be surprised if there were some low numbers every day."

"This is my fourth time I've played and yeah, I'm very excited about this week. I've always loved this tournament."

And as players ease back into their normal routines and set their sites on some low numbers this week at the Travelers, Titleist is once again the overwhelming golf ball choice, with 108 players trusting a Titleist Pro V1 or Pro V1x golf ball, more than six times the nearest competitor with 17 and more than all competitors combined.

Titleist was also the top choice among players in the hybrids category (30) as well as the irons category with 43 sets in play.

Vokey Design Wedges also topped the approach, sand and lob wedge (211) category and Scotty Cameron putters were the top choice among players with 62 putters in play.

• • •

- Four players who finished inside the top 10 at this year's U.S. Open are in the Travelers field this week including the co-runner-up (Pro V1) as well as Titleist Brand Ambassadors Charley Hoffman (8th/Pro V1) and Justin Thomas (T9/Pro V1x) and Titleist golf ball loyalist Trey Mullinax (T9/Pro V1x).
- Nine-time PGA TOUR champion, Titleist Brand Ambassador Jordan Spieth (Pro V1x) will make his debut at this year's Travelers Championship. Spieth is currently No. 6 in the Official World Golf Ranking and sixth in the FedExCup. The 2015 U.S. Open champion has six top-10s in 15 starts this season, including a victory at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
- Six of the last 11 winners of the Travelers Championship have been first-time PGA TOUR champions. Five of those players trusted a Titleist golf ball in victory, including J.J. Henry (2006/Pro V1x), Hunter Mahan (2007), the champions in 2010 (Pro V1x) and 2012 (Pro V1x) and Ken Duke (2013/Pro V1).
- Only two players have won the tournament in wire-to-wire fashion – Gene Littler in 1959 and Tim Norris in 1982.
- The best 72-hole score at the Travelers Championship is 258 held by Kenny Perry (2009/Pro V1x).
- The largest come-from-behind win is seven strokes by Titleist Brand Ambassador Brad Faxon (Pro V1x) in 2005.
- The Travelers Championship donates 100 percent of net proceeds to charity every year. Since 1952, the tournament has generated more than $36 million for charity and in 2016, the tournament generated a tournament record, $2.8 million for more than 160 charities throughout the region.
- In 2017, the primary beneficiary of the Travelers Championship will be the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp in Ashford, Conn. Founded in 1988 by Paul Newman, The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp provides “a different kind of healing” to more than 250,000 seriously ill children and family members annually – all completely free of charge. For many of these children and families, Hole in the Wall provides multiple Camp experiences throughout the year.

USGA Accepts 7,149 Entries for 117th U.S. Amateur Championship

(FAR HILLS, N.J.) – The United States Golf Association has accepted 7,149 entries for the 117th U.S. Amateur Championship, scheduled for Aug. 14-20, 2017 at The Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif., and Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles, Calif.

“Bringing the USGA’s oldest championship to Southern California for the first time since 1976 at two of the nation’s most prominent clubs in Riviera and Bel-Air is richly rewarding,” said Stuart Francis, USGA Championship Committee chairman. “The U.S. Amateur and its iconic Havemeyer Trophy, given to the champion, are held in the highest esteem by amateurs across the country and the world. Our entry numbers reflect that significance.”

Sixty-four players are fully exempt into the championship and the remaining places in the 312-player field will be filled through qualifying at 100 sites across the country and in Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico between July 3-25. Forty-five states will host qualifying, with host state California leading the way with 13 sites.

Among the exempt players are: 2016 runner-up and University of Oklahoma senior Brad Dalke, of Oklahoma City, Okla.; University of Texas senior Scottie Scheffler of Dallas, Texas, who was the low amateur in last week’s U.S. Open at Erin Hills, tying for 27th place; University of Southern California players Sean Crocker, of Long Beach, Calif., who was a semifinalist in 2015, and Jonah Texeira, of Porter Ranch, Calif., who was a semifinalist in 2016; 2016 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion Stewart Hagestad, of Newport Beach, Calif., who was the low amateur in the 2017 Masters; and Sahith Theegala, a Pepperdine University senior from Chino Hills, Calif., who was a quarterfinalist in 2016.

In addition, 46 of the top 50 players in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (as of June 21) are in the field, including No.1 Joaquin Niemann, of Chile; No. 2 Maverick McNealy, of Portola Valley, Calif.; No. 3 Dylan Meyer of Evansville, Ind.; No.4 Braden Thornberry of Olive Branch, Miss.; and No. 5 Collin Morikawa, of La Cañada Flintridge, Calif.

The USGA accepted entries from golfers in all 50 states, including 1,099 from California, as well as 48 other countries. The highest number of entries accepted for the U.S. Amateur is 7,920 for the 1999 championship.

The first entrant was Brett Robinson from Tustin, Calif., and Nicholas Caruso, of Lawrence, Mass., submitted the last entry, 35 seconds before the 5 p.m. (EDT) deadline on June 21.

Riviera will be hosting its second USGA championship, having hosted the 1948 U.S. Open, won by Ben Hogan. Bel-Air will be hosting its third USGA championship after previously serving as the site of the 1976 U.S. Amateur, won by Bill Sander, and the 2004 U.S. Senior Amateur, won by Mark Bemowski.

The induction will be held in conjunction with the Senior LPGA Championship presented by Old National Bank, set for July 10-12, at French Lick Resort. This year’s event will be sanctioned by the LPGA as a senior LPGA major championship and will feature many members of The Legends Tour.

“I was speechless – really stunned, but deeply honored to learn that I will be a part of the Legends Hall of Fame,” said Palmer, who now lives in Long Beach, Calif.

“I feel very honored to be recognized in this way by The Legends Tour and by French Lick Resort,” added Scranton, who now lives in St. Augustine, Fla.

“It has been such a blessing to be a part of this great group of women and French Lick Resort has not only hosted The Legends Tour Championship for the past four years, but it also created a home to showcase the best women golfers in our history,” Scranton said.

While she is a native Texan, Palmer grew up and played junior golf in Bangor, Maine. She attended North Texas State University, where she was runner-up in the 1961 National Collegiate Championship. She was also a four-time winner of the West Texas Amateur and won the 1963 Texas State Women’s Amateur Championship.

Palmer turned professional and became an LPGA Tour member in 1964. She went on to win 19 professional events, including major championships at the 1972 Titleholders Championship and 1975 U.S. Women’s Open.

Palmer also was the LPGA’s top money winner and Player of the Year in 1975, and she finished in the top 10 on the LPGA’s season money list from 1968-1977. She played in her last LPGA Tour event in 1997.

Palmer was inducted into the Texas State Golf Hall of Fame in 1985, as well as into the National Collegiate Hall of Fame in 1988.

She is a Class A LPGA Teaching Professional and has been recognized as one of the nation’s top-50 LPGA teachers. Palmer currently is the director of women’s golf at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club in Mission Viejo, Calif.

In addition, Palmer has played in more than 30 Legends Tour tournaments and routinely still competes in the Legends Honors Division for players age 63 and over.

“It’s wonderful that the Legends Hall of Fame has a home and that a competition for senior women professionals has a worthy stage,” said Palmer. “French Lick definitely brings out the best in your game.”

As an amateur, Scranton won the 1981-1982 St. Louis Metro Championship, the Southern Illinois Championship (1979, 1982-83) and the 1983 Illinois Women’s State Championship.

Collegiately, Scranton attended both Florida State University and the University of Kentucky, where she registered three top-five finishes, including two collegiate tournament wins. Scranton was named to the 1983 All-Southeastern Conference list.

The Illinois native qualified for the LPGA Tour on her first attempt and was a rookie in 1985. She went on to win three LPGA tournaments, including one major championship – the 1991 du Maurier Classic. In addition, she was a member of the 2000 U.S. Solheim Cup Team

After giving birth to twins Libby Jane and Luke Scranton in 2004, Scranton began competing on The Legends Tour, where she has won five times and posted 16 top-10 finishes.

Scranton has also been a stalwart on The Legends Tour’s Team USA for its ISPS Handa Cup competitions, on which she has contributed 19 points and compiled an 8-6-3 match record in the team matches event.

With their induction this summer, Scranton and Palmer will become the ninth and tenth members of the Legends Hall of Fame.

“I was really caught off guard when I found out about this induction,” added Scranton. “I was out of the country visiting my sister and her family in Italy, so it was fun to get to celebrate the news with her.”

Annual inductions include one active member of The Legends Tour who is still regularly competing in official Legends Tour events and one semi-retired Legends Tour member who has made a significant impact on the game during her LPGA and Legends Tour careers.

Palmer and Scranton will join Legends Tour Hall of Fame members Sandra Haynie and Elaine Crosby (inducted in 2016), JoAnne Carner and Rosie Jones (2015), Nancy Lopez and Jane Blalock (2014), and Jan Stephenson and Kathy Whitworth (2013).
